Thanks Matt for a fabulous Macro workshop at Mt Macedon. I loved the small group size along with the great location. The day had a terrific balance of instruction that catered for all needs and time to perfect your skills and technique with one on one support. Many thanks. Corinneread more

Hello All. I have just completed the Macro and textures workshop with three other super people. It was such a great investment. I learnt skills with my lens that I have not achieved yet, had a ball, was able to ask questions and had plenty of one on one time. Perfect session to learn the basics of the camera within the theme of taking pictures to tell a story. We learned how to make a photo unique rather than something you'd find in a Google search. The group environment was friendly, relaxed and non-threatening, and we were given enough space to try the techniques before moving on rather than being rushed through. Worth every penny 🙂read more

Just completed Matt's 3 hour travel & street photography workshop, in an attempt to get off Auto (without getting lost in the manual). The content, group size and instructional style were spot on. Just the right amount of info to get me going in P/A/S modes, together with an appreciation of exposure and white balance, (zoom) lens compression and tips on composition - all explained in a way that's easy to remember. Matt's a positive and friendly instructor, who's able to accommodate different skill levels and camera types in his groups. He also has a wealth of online tutorials to draw upon, as well as very generous after-training support via facebook. Highly recommended.read more

I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. The "theory" was easy to grasp but Matt was very helpful in putting theory to practice. Matt was very approachable and was always available to help me whenever I got stuck. Matt is also very generous in sharing the tricks of the trade like what you can do with a bit of water to create reflection. Thinking of doing the Phone Workshop so that I can improve on my composition. Thanks, Matt.read more

Thoroughly enjoyed my day at Matt's Street and Travel Workshop today. With zero photography skills I was a bit apprehensive. I have never had a camera off auto. Matt uses simple language and scenarios anyone can understand. Finished the day with enough confidence to try new things and actually understand a few things I could do to improve my photos. This was my first camera workshop ever. I had been contemplating a course for sometime but I wanted a one-on-one workshop. I'm getting older now so more travel is on the agenda. I wanted more out of my camera than just auto focus and shoot. Matt was very patient with me!! He explained the technical aspects in an easy and understandable manner and then emails it all out in a pdf. I just now need to practice, practice, practice!! I first met Matt at the Bright Festival of Photography where he was conducting some of the workshops as well as walking tours . I was so impressed with his knowledge and style of teaching that I then booked into his travel and street photography workshop on return to Melbourne . And was not disappointed ! Apart from being one of the nicest people you will ever meet , Matt has a true passion for his craft and just wants to share his knowledge with you . He is a true teacher .... never talking about how good he is or how much he knows ... but genuinely wanting you to be the best you can be and to get the most out of your time with him . And like all good teachers he can take what may originally seem confusing and break it down into simple bits that will promise you at least one " ahh haa " moment and lots of " Wow ! .. I never knew/thought of that before " moments . Sooo worth the effort of attending . Thanks Matt ... I am sure I will be seeing you again .read more

Thanks for a great Zoo workshop. Today was the second workshop I’ve completed with Matt and this time I took my 12 year old daughter along to learn. Matt explains everything in such simple / understandable terms, he demonstrates and then watches closely and jumps in where required to make your pictures better. Be it lighting, focus, depth of field or composition he just seems to know what to explain so that you get better shots. Whatever your skill level Matt can help you improve you photography.read more

If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would! I did Matt’s Melbourne Zoo workshop last week and I LOVED it. You spend the first half hour with Matt explaining the basic concepts of photography. Within 45 minutes I had moved from amateur to enthusiast and was taking the best photos I have ever taken. I have a much better understanding of my camera (that I’ve only owned for a few weeks) and cannot wait to practice what I’ve learned. Matt explains things in an easy to understand way, answers any questions and will even do some quick research on additional equipment. Since the workshop, I’ve ordered a better lens for my camera and am looking forward to booking another workshop with Matt. To say I’m now addicted to photography is a massive understatement. Thanks so much, Matt!read more

The 1:1 session with Matt was perfect to help get my head around the new camera is the shortest time possible. Worth every penny. Basically Matt configured my camera to be luddite-friendly (schmuck mode) and then took me through the basics and showed me a few tricks. I was taking photos to be proud of in minutes. He's a really nice guy and good company, and the notes he made along the way on his notepad were tailored specifically to my level of talent (ha!) and the camera I have purchased. Value for money, very friendly and the level of information was brilliant - maximum level of technical information delivered in an easily-digestible way.read more

The mind is not an empty vessel to be filled, according to the great Roman historian Tacitus. He thought it was more like a fire waiting to be kindled. Precisely the approach a natural teacher the calibre of photographer Matt Krumins takes with his students. After three hours of tuition with Matt and in the convivial company of five other students we toured the environs of the Melbourne zoo and came away wanting more. Matt's conversational style tuition ensures you don't get hung up on your camera or photographic theory. Most of us delay taking a camera course because we are daunted by our camera's abundant settings. Matt imparts all the basic building blocks camera newbies require. More than enough to get you started on your photographic journey. But not just any building blocks. These are well chosen for their simplicity but with an eye to the future. They are the fundamentals you'll need to imbibe others more advanced. So they're essential. As for theory, Matt believes a little is great to get you going, but practise is better. So we went from enclosure to enclosure effortlessly taking in what is required for a "good" photograph and snapped away. Confident now with basic camera program settings, we listened for his experienced tips for the best shot outcomes. "Animals are creatures of habit and highly territorial,'' Matt advised at the tiger enclosure. Good nature photographers know this and work out the stomping ground of their animal and try to predict where they'll appear. So they'll already have their composition worked out before the animal arrives.'' At the Leema enclosure we were asked to observe this creature's grotesque hands. Cute animal but the hands stand out by their lack of empathetic cuteness. The Butterflys were as beautiful as they were fragile. Who would have thought that capturing their eyes would make for a great photograph. And as for the Elephants... "How many pictures of elephants show their size and gait?" Matt asked. And how many hone in an elephant's eye lashes? And this kind of close shot, generally gives you the animal's skin texture as well. Much more interesting photograph..." So it went for the three hours as the "doing" prevailed over theory. By the end of the session this friendly group was inspired to start getting creative with their cameras and to take their imagination off the leash. So glad I decided not to put off a basic camera course because I felt daunted by my camera's high tech settings. Even happier I took the punt to enrol in one of Matt's courses. I look forward to the next one.read more

Choosing a photography workshop is exciting and nerveracking. Nobody wants to look foolish and we want that shot. Mark is professional and easy going and provides the knowledge you need to know. I chose both the night photography and street photography workshops. Both showed how to simplify the photography process. While manual mode seemed like the most professional, I have captured my best night photography shots following Matt's valuable advice. One I will continue to follow and practise. There were many new tips and processes to but they were never hard to understand. Forget reading books or watching YouTube and just spend some hours with Matt. I did Matt's Lightroom workshop and found it very informative. Matt is patient, explains everything in easy language. I have also now completed Matt's Zoo workshop and Travel and Street Photography workshop in the last couple of weeks. I bought my first camera at the age of 16, now at nearly 60 years of age I am still loving photography. Unfortunately the last 30 years I have been tied up with work but I am now starting to resurrect my passion for photography. I recently purchased a Nikon D7200 which I love but unfortunately nothing has changed, the manuals leave a lot to be desired and so I've done several workshops to try and learn about my camera. This included a Nikon School workshop and a Ted's Camera Workshop among others. Quite by accident I stumbled across Matt's website. I started reading some of the tutorials which are written in an excellent lay back manner in a language that is easily understood. Looking through Matt's various workshops I decided to try the Seascapes Workshop and WOW WHAT A DAY!!!! Matt has a gift for teaching........ like his tutorials he relays information in a simple uncomplicated way. I learnt more about photography and more importantly my camera with Matt yesterday than I did with all the other stuff that I've done, and to boot I came away with a couple of shots that I was ecstatic with. There was myself and only two other people in the group which gave Matt plenty of time to spend with each of us.I was keen to do this workshop as we would be using filters and Matt supplied Lee filters for us to use and I've now decided to replace my Hoya filters with one of these systems. I look forward to doing lots more workshops with Matt particularly the Astro Workshop in Cohuna, and once again Matt thank you so much for such a fantastic day! I bought the Melbourne Zoo class as a birthday present for my partner, she said it was the best gift she ever received! Matt was so knowledgeable and patient with us all, and the small group was enthusiastic and motivated to learn and improve their photos. The location was obviously perfect, as it offered numerous subjects to hone our skills on, plus who doesn't want to see 3 teenage lions fooling around! Thanks very much Matt for the superb lesson. OK, I have to be honest I didn't know how to use my camera, ok so I knew how to turn it on... but that was probably it. From the get go Matt made it super easy and used lingo that I understood, and best of all he made it Fun! Learning is fun, and learning something new is always hard at the beginning. I recently attended Matt's "Melbourne by Night" workshop. It was a great small group workshop and Matt took the time to get to know each of our skill levels and catered the workshop accordingly. We learned and practiced different techniques within close proximity to Flinders Street Station. Matt was patient, friendly and able to explain the concepts and techniques in a way that was easy to understand and apply. He has also established a set of resources so you can continue to develop your skills after the course is complete. Matt has reinvigorated my interest in taking great photos and I will definitely be back for more. Thanks Matt!read more

I have taken Matt's zoo as well as the travel and street photography workshop and thoroughly enjoyed both. The latter course was yesterday so I will focus on that one here. Being limited to just six participants means that Matt can provide individual attention to each member and challenge us according to our level. With an emphasis on composition throughout the three hours yesterday, he provided us with lots of different pieces of advice for getting interesting compositions as well as a variety of settings for the practice of these. Although he suggests in advance that we take a notebook and pen to his workshops, I never have time to use mine but do make sure to write up some notes upon return home. I liked the small cards he handed out yesterday summarizing main guidelines to capture blurry backgrounds and capture motion, which were main emphases of yesterday's workshop. I am very impressed with his highly professional organization and the variety of support he offers to his students, including a closed supportive Facebook page for past participants. Yesterday he even explained how he can also offer quick individual advice via text if we get stuck in the field in the future. I definitely plan to take more of Matt's courses in the future.read more

I did the 3 day advanced under water course hosted at feet feet first diving. The course was brilliant. It covered everything I needed to learn in order to move forward with my photography. The subjects were broken down into segments, that were easy to digest, and the explanations were in both plain English, and technical speak. So much better to be able to relate the two, rather than just getting the easy version. It's incredible that so much information was transferred, and that I've been able to retain it. That speaks volumes on matt's ability to teach! The dives were great, even though visibility was poor. Matt was on hand, and ready to change settings and explain them after. All in all, it was a fantastic course that I would strongly recommend to anyone who wants to improve their underwater photography skills.read more

I did the one day seascape course with Matt around a week or so ago. I'd been taking photos for around 6 months prior to the course and mainly do seascapes and I'm self taught. Main reasons I did the course was to one gain a bit more confidence in what I was doing, sort some exposure issues out when in high contrast light and to better understand composing a good image. All these needs were ticked off as well as understanding my camera better. Also got a few tips in Lightroom editing, as well as uploading in the correct resolution and format to social media. Now it's up to me to build on what I've learnt. The small number in this group allows for good one on one time during the day. I think this is a great course for anyone to doread more

I did a private Lightroom workshop with Matt and it was one of the best decisions I've made for a long time. Matt knows his stuff inside out so was able to tailor our workshop to the things I particularly wanted to learn. He is easy to get on with, gives clear, uncomplicated instruction, is generous with his knowledge, and extremely helpful. As well as illuminating Lightroom, he also taught me things about my Olympus OMD-EM1 that I didn't know, despite having taken four days of expensive classes on it — a real bonus. He gives you lots of notes so you have references to hang onto, and invites you to call with any subsequent problem (does he realise what he's letting himself in for?) So I'd recommend that you stop faffing about, driving yourself crazy and cursing the technology, and give Matt a call.read more

Matt was patient and made himself available after the workshop for anyone who wanted to learn anything he did not cover or to just ask general questions, highly recommend this workshop!! Attended the zoo workshop today, Matt has a way of teaching the technical side that makes sense. I learnt so much about composition, how to look at a subject in an ordinary way, then to look at other angles to take the photo from ordinary to extraordinary (with practice they will be extraordinary) His style is laid back and honest. When I first met Matt he was giving a fantastic talk about underwater photography at my dive club. He later helped me pick out new underwater photography gear, which I learned how to use properly in a couple of his wonderful underwater photography courses. Matt is a patient & engaging teacher who has helped me take my photography to the next level. Needless to say, when my partner & I found out that Matt was also available for wedding photography we were very excited and booked him in to capture our special day. His work well & truly exceeded all of our expectations & we are in love with all the stunning images. Matt was a delight to have around on the day, barely noticeable during all those special moments yet very engaging with the guests & our dogs to make sure everyone & everything got captured in the best possible light. Besides the standard repertoire he pulled quite a few tricks out of his photography hat and expertly used his drone & remote flash for some very special shots. Some of our favorite images on a pier & the tidal rock pools also required quite a bit of adventure style photography on Matt's end, but luckily we DIDN'T loose him in that swamp after all 🙂 Thank you Matt, for being part of our special day at the beach and for beautiful photographic memories that will last a lifetime! I have done two of Matt's workshops, "Melbourne by night" and " Travel and street". I was so impressed by the first one that I booked another one a week later. I found both workshops full of content, new ideas, and very educational. Matt has a way of delivery his workshops that are fun, as he's full of humour which puts everyone at ease, his easy going nature makes him approachable and always felt at ease asking him the silliest of questions. Matt's workshops are limited to 6 people, therefore as the group is small, Matt has many opportunities to help everyone individually, which he does very well. It really shows in the way he conducts the workshops how passionate he is about this art. I have done multiple workshops in London, but never learned as much about my camera, photography or had the results in my shots as great as I did after his workshops. I highly recommend his workshops to any level photographer wanting to either learn or sharpen up their skills. Thanks for the experience and new gained skills Matt.read more
