WATERFALLS PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE | DURATION: 7:30am-5pm (approx) | COST: $349.95 inc GST
My waterfalls photography workshop departs Melbourne and takes us out to Toorongo Falls (around 1.5 hours east of Melbourne) in a rainforest environment filled with ferns, gum trees, meandering streams and of course beautiful cascading waterfalls. It's the perfect place to learn long exposure photography and the techniques to create flawless compositions whist getting out into the fresh mountain air, decluttering your mind and letting your creativity run wild. On my waterfalls photography workshop there are Lee filter kits supplied for your use as well as step-by-step quick-guides for your take home. Long exposure in complex environments like rainforest waterfalls can be challenging but should always be fun first, so rather than diving into technical jargon my workshops use stories and relatable analogies to break down big challenges into bite-sized pieces. My approach is to help you to understand and remember the 'why' behind the concepts so that you are able to problem solve independently in the future.

Fantastic beginners workshop for Lightroom with Matt Krumins
I attended the beginners course at Melb Zoo. I found the course very informative for the following reasons:> Matt has a way of explaining technical jargon in layman’s terms. > Matt breaks down the course into bite size chunks in a very logical order. > well structured so that you can understand key components of any camera such that when you go out and take pics you apply what you have just learned and maximise your cameras settings > Matt spends one on one time with participants in a small group to answer all your questions in full. > gives you instant feedback on your photos so that you can take that pic again with better knowledge 5 out of 5 stars. Great course. I’ll definitely recommend Matt’s course to my friends and family.read more

I can’t speak highly enough of Matt and all his help, from sourcing the right equipment right through to the practical theory, setting up our equipment and the actual taking of the photos we were looking to produce. I love the fact that he is also available to answer any questions I have going forward after the workshop - best service ever!read more
I did Matt's zoo workshop over the weekend and I have learnt so much within those 3 hours. 'If you have learnt at least 3 things in one day, then it's a good day!' And sure enough with Matt's help and guidance I learnt many more than 3. Hes very patient and willing to help everybody no matter how silly the question may sound. I had a great day at the zoo, and will most definitely be booking another workshop!read more

I was on Matt's first "Real World Portrait Photography" workshop! It started on the banks of the Yarra with a super little introduction -- some 'lite' theory and a few rehearsals with our cameras, before we came to the real-life buskers. Not only did we learn photographic techniques but also street-photography-etiquette! I had the opportunity to try out so many things with my camera that I wouldn't have thought of beforehand. My partner gave me a tripod and booked me into Matt’s Melbourne city night photography workshop - what a fantastic gift! The small group (6 of us) all had different cameras; Matt effortlessly helped us all to learn more about our camera settings and led us to several spots in the CBD, teaching us a new technique at each stop. The take home laminated prompt cards for each technique are a great idea. Matt runs a number of other small group workshops including Travel and Street Photography so I’ll be back for that one soon!read more
Matts workshop was a gift from my husband. We travel alot and he knew I absolutely love photography bur never learnt how to use my amazing camera to its full potential! Matts workshop varied in skill yet he gave enough one on one coaching for everyone to be on the same page. I feel like as a noob in photography i was able to grasp the terminology and a way better understanding of my camera and what I can do to make my shots even better. Matt's eye for photography is amazing. He is very creative, artistic and a great teacher. Thanks for all your patience I feel I've taken alot from the course. I attended Matt’s “beginner” workshop at the zoo and loved it! Matt has a fantastic teaching style that was informative but not overwhelming. He has obviously put a lot of time and effort into preparing the workshop to cover different key points and provided us with handouts so we can review what was learned. The booking process was easy through his website and Matt has already followed up with some great links to tutorials on his website to help me with some topics I wanted further clarification on. I look forward to booking the city/travel workshop and hopefully the Lightroom editing workshop, and would highly recommend Matt’s courses to friends and family. I attended the zoo workshop with my 14 year old son. Both of us were complete beginners outside of auto mode. I came away learning how to take photos up against glass to avoid reflection, how to use white balance, exposure compensation and how to take great photos in BW. Matt also taught us about animal behaviour and how to get the best shots when taking photos of animals. Matt had a great sense of humour and made the day really fun and memorable. I attended Matts Melbourne Zoo Workshop on the weekend. I had only owned my DLSR for a month and felt so intimidated by it. By the end of the workshop I felt a lot more confident in using the camera and actually excited to practice more. Matt was easy to talk to, patient and made the whole process fun. While photography can be technical everything he explained was very easy to understand and follow. An extra bonus was the support Matt provides after the workshop. Emailing tutorials, providing a facebook group with other students to enhance our learning and being available to answer any questions I might have in the future. I would not hesitate to recommend his workshops and actually hope to do his travel workshop later in the year. Thanks heaps Matt!!read more
I went on Matt's zoo workshop and cannot speak highly enough of it. I would class myself as a beginner and was still getting to grips with my DSLR prior to going on the course. Within half an hour I already understood a lot more about my camera through Matt's tuition and we started to put the theory into practical use. I went from using solely auto settings to using other modes and therefore being in a lot more control of the pictures I was taking. The size of the group was perfect and Matt really put his full time into all of the group. I will be sure to find another workshop to go on soon!read more

I participated in Matt's Tooronga Falls workshop last Thursday, which was a huge learning curve for me. I'm still at the stage where I struggle with camera settings. Matt's teaching method is so easy to understand & I'm sure some of his gems of knowledge have stuck into my aging brain. I loved his examples about the correct choice of camera settings & these will make my future photography a little less daunting. This was my first experience with ND Filters - I was so pleased I had a CPL filter in my camera bag, as I had never considered attaching it on the lens underneath my ND Filter.I have came away from this workshop with enthusiasm to tackle some long exposures near home at Point Lonsdale & along the coast at Torquay. I was very impressed with the size of the group (4 in our case). Matt was so obliging to give us one-on-one attention to what we needed, to ensure we understood how to compose our photo and to follow our supplied chart, to achieve some great long exposures of the waterfalls. Thanks Matt - I'll be booking another date soon.read more

Perfect session to learn the basics of the camera within the theme of taking pictures to tell a story. We learned how to make a photo unique rather than something you'd find in a Google search. I first met Matt at the Bright Festival of Photography where he was conducting some of the workshops as well as walking tours . I was so impressed with his knowledge and style of teaching that I then booked into his travel and street photography workshop on return to Melbourne . And was not disappointed !Apart from being one of the nicest people you will ever meet , Matt has a true passion for his craft and just wants to share his knowledge with you . He is a true teacher .... never talking about how good he is or how much he knows ... but genuinely wanting you to be the best you can be and to get the most out of your time with him . And like all good teachers he can take what may originally seem confusing and break it down into simple bits that will promise you at least one " ahh haa " moment and lots of " Wow ! .. I never knew/thought of that before " moments . Sooo worth the effort of attending . Thanks Matt ... I am sure I will be seeing you again .read more

If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would! I did Matt’s Melbourne Zoo workshop last week and I LOVED it. You spend the first half hour with Matt explaining the basic concepts of photography. Within 45 minutes I had moved from amateur to enthusiast and was taking the best photos I have ever taken. I have a much better understanding of my camera (that I’ve only owned for a few weeks) and cannot wait to practice what I’ve learned. Matt explains things in an easy to understand way, answers any questions and will even do some quick research on additional equipment. Since the workshop, I’ve ordered a better lens for my camera and am looking forward to booking another workshop with Matt. To say I’m now addicted to photography is a massive understatement. The 1:1 session with Matt was perfect to help get my head around the new camera is the shortest time possible. Worth every penny. Basically Matt configured my camera to be luddite-friendly (schmuck mode) and then took me through the basics and showed me a few tricks. I was taking photos to be proud of in minutes. He's a really nice guy and good company, and the notes he made along the way on his notepad were tailored specifically to my level of talent (ha!) and the camera I have purchased. The mind is not an empty vessel to be filled, according to the great Roman historian Tacitus. He thought it was more like a fire waiting to be kindled.Precisely the approach a natural teacher the calibre of photographer Matt Krumins takes with his students. After three hours of tuition with Matt and in the convivial company of five other students we toured the environs of the Melbourne zoo and came away wanting more.Matt's conversational style tuition ensures you don't get hung up on your camera or photographic theory. Most of us delay taking a camera course because we are daunted by our camera's abundant settings. Matt imparts all the basic building blocks camera newbies require. More than enough to get you started on your photographic journey. But not just any building blocks. These are well chosen for their simplicity but with an eye to the future. They are the fundamentals you'll need to imbibe others more advanced. So they're essential. As for theory, Matt believes a little is great to get you going, but practise is better. So we went from enclosure to enclosure effortlessly taking in what is required for a "good" photograph and snapped away.Confident now with basic camera program settings, we listened for his experienced tips for the best shot outcomes."Animals are creatures of habit and highly territorial,'' Matt advised at the tiger enclosure. Good nature photographers know this and work out the stomping ground of their animal and try to predict where they'll appear. So they'll already have their composition worked out before the animal arrives.''At the Leema enclosure we were asked to observe this creature's grotesque hands. Cute animal but the hands stand out by their lack of empathetic cuteness. The Butterflys were as beautiful as they were fragile. Who would have thought that capturing their eyes would make for a great photograph. And as for the Elephants..."How many pictures of elephants show their size and gait?" Matt asked. And how many hone in an elephant's eye lashes? And this kind of close shot, generally gives you the animal's skin texture as well. Much more interesting photograph..."So it went for the three hours as the "doing" prevailed over theory. By the end of the session this friendly group was inspired to start getting creative with their cameras and to take their imagination off the leash. So glad I decided not to put off a basic camera course because I felt daunted by my camera's high tech settings. Even happier I took the punt to enrol in one of Matt's courses.I look forward to the next one.read more

I went on Matt's Street and Travel Workshop and thoroughly enjoyed it .Learned a lot of tips and techniques. Looking forward to doing another workshop with Matt.
I bought my first camera at the age of 16, now at nearly 60 years of age I am still loving photography. Unfortunately the last 30 years I have been tied up with work but I am now starting to resurrect my passion for photography. I recently purchased a Nikon D7200 which I love but unfortunately nothing has changed, the manuals leave a lot to be desired and so I've done several workshops to try and learn about my camera. This included a Nikon School workshop and a Ted's Camera Workshop among others. Quite by accident I stumbled across Matt's website. I started reading some of the tutorials which are written in an excellent lay back manner in a language that is easily understood. Looking through Matt's various workshops I decided to try the Seascapes Workshop and WOW WHAT A DAY!!!! Matt has a gift for teaching........ like his tutorials he relays information in a simple uncomplicated way. I learnt more about photography and more importantly my camera with Matt yesterday than I did with all the other stuff that I've done, and to boot I came away with a couple of shots that I was ecstatic with. There was myself and only two other people in the group which gave Matt plenty of time to spend with each of us.I was keen to do this workshop as we would be using filters and Matt supplied Lee filters for us to use and I've now decided to replace my Hoya filters with one of these systems. I look forward to doing lots more workshops with Matt particularly the Astro Workshop in Cohuna, and once again Matt thank you so much for such a fantastic day! Looking forward to the next one!read more

I have taken Matt's zoo as well as the travel and street photography workshop and thoroughly enjoyed both. The latter course was yesterday so I will focus on that one here. Being limited to just six participants means that Matt can provide individual attention to each member and challenge us according to our level. With an emphasis on composition throughout the three hours yesterday, he provided us with lots of different pieces of advice for getting interesting compositions as well as a variety of settings for the practice of these. Although he suggests in advance that we take a notebook and pen to his workshops, I never have time to use mine but do make sure to write up some notes upon return home. I liked the small cards he handed out yesterday summarizing main guidelines to capture blurry backgrounds and capture motion, which were main emphases of yesterday's workshop. I am very impressed with his highly professional organization and the variety of support he offers to his students, including a closed supportive Facebook page for past participants. Yesterday he even explained how he can also offer quick individual advice via text if we get stuck in the field in the future. I definitely plan to take more of Matt's courses in the future.read more
I signed up for Street & Travel Photography workshop in Melbourne, and have to say it was one of the most engaging workshops I've done. With only small group (6 people) there was plenty of 1:1 mixed with group sessions. Matt is very light hearted and you can see his genuine desire to help improve your photography, no matter your experience level. I mainly took the workshop to learn how to tell stories through images, improve my composition and pick up some new tricks along the way. I can't wait to do another workshop and test my skills further with Matt. Thanks again.read more
My husband and I attended the zoo workshop this morning.Loved every minute.Got some great tips and tricks.Well paced. Good amount of content.Matt is very helpful, patient and a genuinely nice bloke.
Matt's simple, no nonsense approach was a breath of fresh air. This 3 hour workshop won't turn you into a professional photographer but it will certainly turn you into a photographer who dares to try out various options to get a better result and with a "new" way of seeing what you want to shoot. Thanks Matt.read more

Completed the Advanced Underwater photography course with Matt and can thoroughly recommend It. I did the 3 day advanced under water course hosted at feet feet first diving. The course was brilliant. It covered everything I needed to learn in order to move forward with my photography. The subjects were broken down into segments, that were easy to digest, and the explanations were in both plain English, and technical speak. So much better to be able to relate the two, rather than just getting the easy version. It's incredible that so much information was transferred, and that I've been able to retain it. That speaks volumes on matt's ability to teach! The dives were great, even though visibility was poor. Matt was on hand, and ready to change settings and explain them after. All in all, it was a fantastic course that I would strongly recommend to anyone who wants to improve their underwater photography skills.read more
I did the one day seascape course with Matt around a week or so ago. I'd been taking photos for around 6 months prior to the course and mainly do seascapes and I'm self taught. Main reasons I did the course was to one gain a bit more confidence in what I was doing, sort some exposure issues out when in high contrast light and to better understand composing a good image. All these needs were ticked off as well as understanding my camera better. Also got a few tips in Lightroom editing, as well as uploading in the correct resolution and format to social media. Now it's up to me to build on what I've learnt. The small number in this group allows for good one on one time during the day. I think this is a great course for anyone to doread more
I did a private Lightroom workshop with Matt and it was one of the best decisions I've made for a long time. Matt knows his stuff inside out so was able to tailor our workshop to the things I particularly wanted to learn. He is easy to get on with, gives clear, uncomplicated instruction, is generous with his knowledge, and extremely helpful. As well as illuminating Lightroom, he also taught me things about my Olympus OMD-EM1 that I didn't know, despite having taken four days of expensive classes on it — a real bonus. He gives you lots of notes so you have references to hang onto, and invites you to call with any subsequent problem (does he realise what he's letting himself in for?) So I'd recommend that you stop faffing about, driving yourself crazy and cursing the technology, and give Matt a call.read more
what an amazing afternoon we had with Matt doing the street photography. whilst we are not beginners at photography, we came away with another layer of knowledge and insight of how to get 'the shot'. a great way of explaining the settings on your camera, and a very creative approach to getting the photo we all aspire to. wonderful Matt, we look forward to doing more with you. it is all hands on, and so much fun ! thanks so much Matt.read more
In one word Awesome, Attended Matt's Lightroom tutorial last night as expected it was fabulous. Learnt so many cool features that LR has to offer. Matt was patient and made himself available after the workshop for anyone who wanted to learn anything he did not cover or to just ask general questions, highly recommend this workshop!! Attended the zoo workshop today, Matt has a way of teaching the technical side that makes sense. I learnt so much about composition, how to look at a subject in an ordinary way, then to look at other angles to take the photo from ordinary to extraordinary (with practice they will be extraordinary) His style is laid back and honest. I can't wait for the next workshop I do with Matt.read more
Who knew you could learn so much in 3hrs! Best course for a beginner such as myself:)
I absolutely loved Matt's seascape and pier course, he made it seem easy! Can't wait to do more. Thanks Matt.
I just completed the Travel and Street Photography course with Matt. I did a one-one-one workshop with Matt in the CBD, and it was well worth the investment. As well as lots of clear advice on the tech stuff that can otherwise be made over-complicated, Matt showed me how to get really interesting and surprising shots, where I ordinarily wouldn't have bothered reaching for the camera. I also got experience and needed encouragement in approaching people on the street for shots. Recommended.read more
Did an underwater photography course with Matt. Great course and great teacher. Very knowledgeable and patient. Highly recommend!!!
Before I had even met Matt or purchased a course, he helped me choosing my underwater camera setup, free of charge. I am still extremely happy with my setup and very much value the initial advice Matt gave me. Will book on one of his courses soon.read more
WARNING: These courses will make you addicted to photography and how to get the best shots you can! Matt has found the perfect mix of theory (that is presented in a way that makes it less intimidating than it seems) and the practical of just getting out there and shooting - with all the support you need. As a beginner to photography, the skills I've learnt have been easily transferable to conditions/environments outside the course and I've left the workshops confident to practice by myself! The small sizes mean regardless of your experience level there is always something you can take from these workshops. I've attended the Zoo and Seascapes workshops and will no doubt book into another one soon!read more
Matt's technical knowledge, enthusiasm and friendly personality make him a superb teacher. His tours are a great way to learn more about photography while having an enjoyable day out.

Thanks Matt For a fantastic morning out at your Melbourne Zoo Workshop this week Wednesday the 14/6/17, all of your help not only with my camera settings but also on how to place your subject in the frame and to use the foreground to fill the shot was great. I attended Matt's Zoo workshop on the weekend with the course being a present from my wife. I have attended a few different courses now with different teachers, but Matt's session was the best so far. His ability to breakdown complex camera settings into layman terms was fantastic and made things easy to understand. The hints and tips he shared will not only serve me well in a safari game park but in my backyard as well! Can't wait to attend the Melbourne by Night course later this week!read more
