The old “is this a good photo?”

How many times have you asked yourself or someone else “is this a good photo?” Or something along the same lines? I almost guarantee it’s more than you would admit. I’ve been guilty of this too over the years, I mean how else do you know if you got the shot or not if you don’t ask? The problem with asking a question like this though is that firstly it’s subjective, but more importantly asking the question really relies on you or your audience knowing what you were trying to achieve in the first place. So how do I understand what I believe was a ‘good shot’? I put it through my personal pub test:

  1. What was I trying to achieve? If you don’t know where you were going then it’s hard to understand if you got there.

  2. If I asked 10 people what the photo was conveying would I get at least 7 people agreeing with me? (unprompted)

  3. Was it deliberate? I mean yes you can have an ‘accidentally great shot’ but I don’t really put those in the success bucket. I keep them, I just don’t reflect on them as an improvement of skill.
