Lenses: My primary focus
Over the past month I’ve been acquiring prime lenses which are slowly (read quickly) replacing my zoom lenses. I currently shoot Sony and the new range of f/1.4 and f/1.8 primes are incredible. They are super sharp wide open or closed down and even better they are comparatively tiny and light weight. I’ve had the 35mm lens for a while now but have just added the 24mm f/1.4, 14mm f/1.8 and 135mm f/1.8 to my collection and I’m freaking LOVING them.
The challenge with primes is of course that you zoom with your legs which is great for my step count but can be limiting if you choose the wrong focal length. To help get around this a bit I’ve assigned one of the custom function buttons to my ‘crop sensor mode’ (APS-C Super35 on Sony). This effectively crops the image by a factor of 1.5 as it would on a crop sensor camera. So my 35mm act similarly to a 50mm whilst still retaining 20’ish megapixels. Now to choose which one of these new recruits will make it to the camera bag for my Indonesia trip… I’m thinking the 24mm and 35mm… or the 14mm too… or maybe… all of them? Yeah sounds good.
