PREPARING & PRINTING PHOTOGRAPHY NIGHT

with Matt Krumins Photography

BRING YOUR IMAGES TO LIFE

In a world where most photos live and die on screens then get buried in a Lightroom catalog, it’s easy to forget the power of a printed image. These print nights are all about bringing your work to life—off the hard drive and onto paper as you print your own images on professional grade equipment.

We keep things simple and hands-on giving you a basic understanding of colour workflow. Then we look at your edited images and walk through the process of touching them up to make sure what you see on screen matches what you see from the printer.

You’ll have a chance to look at paper options that best suit your images and then we hit print and see your images take shape in the real world.

Digital photography is fast and flexible, but it can also feel throwaway. Printing slows things down. It gives your work a physical presence and invites people to really stop and look. Whether it ends up on a wall, a portfolio page, or just your fridge, a print changes how an image is experienced.

This is an extremely cost effective, fun and educational way to print your work. The session cost is $149.95 (excluding prints) and your printing is charged at cost price by the metre (typically 44″ paper and ink costs around $65 per metre).

WORKSHOP PLAN

1. SUBMIT YOUR IMAGES
You will need to select and submit your images using my easy-to-follow instructions a week in advance of the session. Images should be edited but we will make adjustments for print.
2. UNDERSTANDING COLOUR
Colour workflow is a minefield and in many cases far too complex for our needs. We look at breaking down the most important aspects to give you a practical understanding of how to translate images from screen to print.
3. IMAGE TOUCH UPS
Next it's time to get hands on as we put theory into practice and touch up your images together on a calibrated Eizo monitor.
4. PRINT
You'll then select your paper from a range Canson Infinity professional papers and canvas, choose your sizing (up to 44") and hit print brining your images into the real world.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

This session is all about brining your favourite photos to life so you will need to submit images in a DNG format so we can touch them up whilst preserving your edits and quality. I’ll provide instructions on how to do this prior to the session. It’s important that the images are either your own or that you have explicit permission/rights to print the images yourself.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You don’t need any experience at all however a basic level of image processing is recommended as unedited images can sometimes lack the magic that brings images to life. We will do some basic touching up to adjust your images for print but it’s an expectation that the images have been prepared as final versions of your edits before the night.

Given that people will want to print different sizes and quantities the session price does not include the print materials (ink/paper/canvas). These are charged at cost price and are approximately $65 per metre (bases on a 1.1m wide paper). This means you could print 2 55cm x 110cm images for $65 inc GST or you could go to town and print a 110cm x 200cm print for $130 inc GST. We will arrange the prints and sizes to optimise paper usage and we can calculate your use prior to printing.

There is no set limit to how many images you can print however depending on the size of your desired prints and the total prints from the group you can expect to fit in at least a 2-3 large prints or many smaller ones (grouped onto a sheet). If you’ve got specific needs please contact me on 0402812805 and we can talk through options.

The printer we are using has rolls of paper that are maximum 110cm wide (44″) which means you can technically print up to 15m x 1.1m with a whole roll of paper. Obviously we are not going to be printing that bit but you do have a huge range of options when it comes to sizing. The limiting factor will be the image size that you are wanting to print. Prior to the session I will provide some instructions on how to calculate maximum print sizes from your images. On the night you will also have access to upscaling software where we can ‘blow up’ your images if needed.
