Travel and Street photography isn’t all about settings and theory, it’s about being confident enough with your camera that you don’t miss the moment. This workshop really focuses on being creative and showing people the world around them in ways they have never seen before. It’s about sparking imaginations, transporting people to another place and capturing the atmosphere rather than just pictures of ‘things’. Do you want a personalised approach specific to your camera? You’ve found it. With years of experience and thousands of workshop participants you’d be hard pressed to find a camera brand or model that I don’t know my way around.

WORKSHOP PLAN

1. MEET & GREET

We meet at the top of the stairs under the Flinders clocks before we have a chat and get to know your experience level, goals and the type of images you love. This allows me to personalise our workshop content to meet your needs.

2. SETTINGS RECAP

Before we begin we cover off the basics to make sure we are all on the same page. This gives newer photographers an opportunity to catch up and more experienced photographers to hear a different approach or simply a quick refresher.

3. COMPOSITION & PERSPECTIVE

Almost to prove that photography is more than just settings and rules we jump straight into a session working on composition. We look at lens compression as well as my process for building compositions that speak the story you want to tell.

4. SHUTTER & APERTURE PRIORITY

Next up we start moving up into the city alleyways looking at shutter and aperture priority mode and applying them practically to help you bring creative flare to your shots.

5. SUPPORT

Following our workshop you will be invited to join our exclusive 'Matt's Mob' Facebook support group. This is probably the friendliest photography group on the internet with hundreds of like-minded people all wanting to keep the fun in photography.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

CAMERA

You’ll need a camera with access to some manual settings for this workshop as the techniques we cover rely heavily on Aperture & Shutter Priority mode. This doesn’t mean you need to know how to use these modes just yet, we just need access to them for the workshop.

Please make sure you have a fully charged battery and space on your memory card.

LENSES

I always recommend brining a range of lenses if you have them (both wide/telephoto) as they they can be key to achieving interesting compositions. If you have a prime lens bring it along too :-)

PERSONAL

Check the weather forecast before the workshop in case there is a chance of light showers, these can be amazing for our photos but terrible for frizzy hair and soggy clothing.

WHAT IS THE WET WEATHER PLAN?

Awesome! In travel & street photography rain is actually an incredible thing giving us amazing reflections to use in our photographs. That said, if we are experiencing significant rain we will postpone our workshop by offering a voucher code for you to re-book on a workshop at your convenience! I always recommend bringing a waterproof jacket as even on a sunny day Melbourne can show it’s unique ability to change on a dime!

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

Your 3 hour walking travel & street photography workshop has a limit to a very small group giving you plenty of one-on-one instruction as well as personal attention relevant to your camera brand and model.

Also, I believe that photography concepts take practice and time so at the conclusion of your workshop you will be invited to an exclusive online support group where you can continue to grow your photography alongside other workshop participants!

I first attended Matt's Street photography course way, way, wayyyyy back in 2017, since then life got busy. I recently retired, if you can call it that and remembering how much I enjoyed Matt's course I undertook a few of his pre-recorded online courses, which were also nothing short of excellent.

Recently I booked a face to face session with Matt as I was stuck as to what to do next with my (very old, think prehistoric) camera kit!

You can read all the other reviews here, buy what strikes me about Matt is his incredible passion for photography and how important it is to him for others to really experience that.

Moreover, I was surprised after booking one of his pre-recorded courses that he insisted on refunding me the cost because "it was out of date". Honestly, it was slightly out of date at worst, so much so it made no difference! Than again, shortly after our recent one on one session, much to my surprise he rang me as he wanted to share something he had since found out with me.

This from a guy who has so many commitments.

I also must mention his referral to Nigel at Camera House in Croydon helped me no end, and saved me a few dollars as well!

He thoroughly walked us through step by step how to use our cameras and housings, which settings and modes to start with, and explained so clearly the main things to work on as beginners - how to position ourselves in the water, frame the subject, take care of lighting and reduce backscatter. Having recently acquired a DSLR I was quite daunted by all the buttons and dials.After the course, I now have some understanding of the adjustments I can make to take better photos. As always Matt has provided a very informative, information packed, workshop with lots of opportunities to practice during the day. With cheat cards (to take out into the field) and a workbook, with QR codes to video links to take home as a reference to when you need a refresher. I attended Matt’s October 2023 Bright Bootcamp and what an amazing and educational experience it was. If you want a relaxing 9 to 5 experience, this bootcamp is not for you. If you want to catch the sunrise in some of Victoria’s best high-country locations, do astrophotography from the top of a mountain, photograph wildlife at daybreak, all in an incredible learning environment, then this bootcamp is for you. Matt is an engaging person with a well-honed teaching and coaching style. He explains the concepts processes behind photography in simple to understand terms, supported by analogies, examples, demonstration and then guided doing. I am a reasonably novice photographer and my skill level, particularly in photo composition and technique, improved significantly over the course of the week. Refunds: Workshop bookings are non-refundable.

Date changes: Workshop date changes are allowed with at least 7 days notice.

Transfers: Bookings may be transferred to a new participant anytime leading up to the workshop however I ask you you update me via email so as I am able to update the contact details (info@mattkruminsphotography.com.au)

POSTPONEMENT OF WORKSHOP

Wet Weather: If we are expecting wet weather that may significantly impact on your workshop I will notify you via phone and if unsuccessful I will send an email out. You will be provided with a re-booking voucher code to rebook at your convenience. Generally there are several days notice with wet-weather postponement however this can be on the day in extreme circumstances.

Safety: Your safety and enjoyment on our workshop comes above all else. In rare instances our workshop locations can be impacted by temporary closures, social disruptions (CBD) or by other extraordinary circumstances. If there is anything that will jeopardise either your safety or enjoyment of our session I will firstly look to adapt our workshop but postponement may also be an option if an equal alternative cannot be found.
