Join me in one of the worlds’ wildlife epicentres for an unforgettable photography workshop as we go out on the prowl to find the Big 5, exotic birds and everything in between. Staying at my favourite family run lodge in the southern part of Kruger we will be spending our days honing your skills with photography walks, private safaris and an incredible landscape day in the middle of our trip as well as evening review and editing sessions.

With a small group of just 6 participants you are guaranteed a window seat in our private safari vehicle as well as continuous coaching during our outings.

To help prepare you for success I will be hosting a private wildlife workshop for the group in the months leading up to the workshop which includes my 40 page Guide to Wildlife Photography as well as quick reference flash cards so that you can hit the ground running rather than spending your trip working up from square one.

Experience the breathtaking beauty of rock formations, picturesque waterfalls, landscapes and magnificent views of the Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes, as well as Pilgrims Rest, situated in the Lowveld Escarpment.

A WORKSHOP, NOT A TOUR

Some 'workshops' are just tours with a different name, that's not my style. This trip is full of micro workshop sessions, hands on help, image reviews and critique both as a group and as an individual.

NEEDLES LODGE MARLOTH PARK

Needles offers eight beautifully appointed suites, each with its own character and atmosphere and all the luxuries to ensure a comfortable stay in the bush. From your bed, you can see out into the bush. Watch as the animals that regularly visit the lodge wander past your suite. Or walk through the large sliding doorway leading onto the railed wooden deck, which links back to the central deck. The central lounge and entertainment area at Needles Lodge extends out onto a large outside deck surrounding the trunk of a giant Marula tree.

Workshop trip rate is based on a private room and includes breakfast and dinner.

TRIP ITINERARY

Flights are not included however we will try our best to co-ordinate our team flying together from Melbourne or meeting at Johanassburg airport for a connection to Nelspruit where we will meet a transfer to Needles to begin our workshop.

DAY 1

ARRIVAL

Arrive in Nelspruit airport and get transferred to Needles Lodge in Marloth Park. Settle in and head out for a sunset walking safari to Crocodile River.

A typical safari day involves an early wake up with a hot beverage and rusks served at 04h30 before our departure for Kruger National Park at approx 04h45. We stop for a picnic breakfast between 08h30 – 10h00, depending on viewing. Lunch break at one of the rest camps. Returning to the lodge in the afternoon or evening. Depending on timing we may start or finish the days earlier and combine a walking safari in to scout local game at the Crocodile River and surrounds. Evening includes dinner and image download/review/critique.

Early morning walking safari for those with any steam left followed by breakfast and farewells as we check out and get transferred to Nelspruit for your departing flights.

EQUIPMENT & FITNESS REQUIREMENTS

CAMERAS

Yep, you will need a camera! Whilst not essential, to make the most of this workshop experience I would suggest having a reasonably modern camera with good focus capability. If you’re not sure, give me a bell – 0402812805.

LENSES

Yep, you will need a camera! We will be covering a combination of wildlife, landscape and likely macro too. For wildlife I suggest a telephoto lens of at least 400mm (34mm equivalent) however if birds are of significant interest then a lens of 600mm+ is recommended. If you’re not sure, give me a bell – 0402812805.

OTHER CAMERA GEAR

For this workshop I suggest you have:
-Monopod with tilt head
-Polarising Filter for your wide and telephoto lens
-Laptop for editing
-Spare batteries & travel charger

FITNESS

This trip is mostly sedentary as we will be in safari trucks much of the time. These trucks can be high and in some cases require you to climb a short ladder. We will also be doing a number of walking safaris on uneven tracks however these should not be strenuous. If you’re unsure, please give me a call on 0402812805

WHAT EXPERIENCE LEVEL DO I NEED TO BE?

We cover A LOT of content on this trip but we are a small group and always start our theory sessions from the ground up so even as a beginner you will be more than welcome. I pride myself on having small groups to cater to everyones needs and this trip is no different. You will be surrounded by all levels of photographers from entry level to experienced all who share the same goals, to improve and have some fun.

BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS

DEFINITIONS

“MKP” means Matt Krumins Photography

“The Workshop” means the Matt Krumins Photography Kruger Wildlife Photography Workshop from November 16th to November 23rd 2024.

“Supplier” means third party supplier or service provider

ACCEPTANCE & PRIVACY DECLARATION

Payment of the deposit constitutes acceptance of these terms and conditions and your consent that your details may be disclosed to third parties including, without limitation, hotels, restaurants, tour operators and other related Suppliers providing services in connection with The Workshop.

The Workshop includes:

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

MKP will arrange bookings and reservations as an agent on your behalf for included products and services in connection with The Workshop that are not directly provided by MKP (eg accommodation, tours, meals). By agreeing to these terms and conditions you also acknowledge that you are subject to the terms and conditions of each Supplier with whom MKP may make arrangements on your behalf.

MKP is not liable for the acts, omissions or defaults whether negligent or otherwise of any Supplier which MKP makes arrangements with on your behalf in connection with The Workshop, including but not limited to:

For cancellation of tours or accommodation
For any deviations, strikes, re-scheduling, delays or the failure to provide facilities or accommodation
For the insolvency of any Supplier

MKP does not accept liability for any loss, injury, delay, damage or additional expense incurred by you as a result of events beyond the control of MKP, including act of God, acts of Government, war, fire, civil disturbance, industrial action, failure of machinery or apparatus, or fluctuations in rates of exchange.

DEPOSITS AND PAYMENT

The total cost for The Workshop is $7000 AUD per person. To confirm you place on The Workshop, you are required to pay a deposit of $2000. Final payment of the remaining balance is required no later than 90 days prior to the commencement of The Workshop.

Payment can be made via direct bank transfer or credit card (fees apply).

CANCELLATION

If you need to cancel your booking on The Workshop and it is more than 90 days from the commencement of The Workshop, you will be refunded any monies paid to MKP, minus an administrative fee of $299 and any Supplier fees or charges.

If you need to cancel your booking on The Workshop and it is less than 90 days from the commencement of The Workshop, you will be refunded any monies paid to MKP, minus your deposit of $2000 and any Supplier fees or charges.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTATION (PASSPORTS, VISAS, INSURANCE, ETC)

It is your responsibility to ensure that you fulfil the passport, visa and any other immigration requirements specific to your travel plans. MKP does not accept any responsibility in the case of you being unable to travel due to not complying with any such requirement.

It is also your responsibility to ensure you have obtained adequate travel insurance appropriate to yourself and your travel plans. Valid travel insurance documentation must be provided to MKP prior to or at the time of final payment being made for The Workshop. MKP reserves the right to cancel your booking if no documentation is provided.

TRAVEL ADVICE AND HEALTH

MKP recommends that you contact the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or visit their website at www.smartraveller.gov.au for general travel advice, as well as specific advice (including safety alert levels) relating to the destination you wish to visit. You can also register your travel plans with DFAT, so that you may be more easily contacted in an emergency.

You must ensure that you are aware of any health requirements and recommended precautions relevant to your travel and ensure that you carry all necessary vaccination documentation. We recommend that you consult with your local doctor, travel medical service or specialist vaccination clinic before commencing your travel. General health advice for the destination you wish to visit is also available from DFAT (see smarttraveller.gov.au).

As always Matt has provided a very informative, information packed, workshop with lots of opportunities to practice during the day. With cheat cards (to take out into the field) and a workbook, with QR codes to video links to take home as a reference to when you need a refresher. I participated in almost all of Matt's workshops, I highly recommend any workshop Matt has available, the one I attended this time was the Advanced Wildlife workshop, they are packed full of information, one on one attention, where needed, and lots of practice time.

I attended Matt’s October 2023 Bright Bootcamp and what an amazing and educational experience it was. If you want a relaxing 9 to 5 experience, this bootcamp is not for you. If you want to catch the sunrise in some of Victoria’s best high-country locations, do astrophotography from the top of a mountain, photograph wildlife at daybreak, all in an incredible learning environment, then this bootcamp is for you. Matt is an engaging person with a well-honed teaching and coaching style. He explains the concepts processes behind photography in simple to understand terms, supported by analogies, examples, demonstration and then guided doing. I am a reasonably novice photographer and my skill level, particularly in photo composition and technique, improved significantly over the course of the week. I thoroughly recommend this bootcamp to anyone wanting to improve their photography, in a supportive environment, in one of the best locations in Australia.

I first attended Matt's Street photography course way, way, wayyyyy back in 2017, since then life got busy. I recently retired, if you can call it that and remembering how much I enjoyed Matt's course I undertook a few of his pre-recorded online courses, which were also nothing short of excellent.

Recently I booked a face to face session with Matt as I was stuck as to what to do next with my (very old, think prehistoric) camera kit!

You can read all the other reviews here, buy what strikes me about Matt is his incredible passion for photography and how important it is to him for others to really experience that.

Moreover, I was surprised after booking one of his pre-recorded courses that he insisted on refunding me the cost because "it was out of date". Honestly, it was slightly out of date at worst, so much so it made no difference! Than again, shortly after our recent one on one session, much to my surprise he rang me as he wanted to share something he had since found out with me.

This from a guy who has so many commitments.

I also must mention his referral to Nigel at Camera House in Croydon helped me no end, and saved me a few dollars as well!

I can't recommend MKP highly enough!

Matt's marvellous Melbourne Zoo Workshop for beginners was amazing. The capped, small group size is ideal for learning. Matt displays a passion for sharing his extensive knowledge of photography. He has an engaging approach to teach the basic skills required to use a range of cameras to achieve impressive results in just three hours. I highly recommend this workshop. I did the Advanced Wildlife Photography workshop and it exceeded my expectations. A great mix of theory and practice and a great dose of humour. The small group size meant we had plenty of opportunities to get our questions answered. Matt is a fantastic photography teacher - practical, engaging, and easy to understand. Matt’s Night Photography workshop was fantastic! Learning how to take night photos was wonderful but it was how he helped me see what to put in or leave out of my framing that took my images for ok to stunning!! Matt's Beginner Wildlife Workshop at Melb Zoo was great! I went into it knowing basically nothing about my camera and photography and Matt was able to give us some awesome tips/tricks, as well as a run down of the basics so that we could get our heads around how to start to take more meaningful and beautiful photos 🙂 Matt was super awesome and passionate about sharing his knowledge. Not to mention his analogies were great at dumbing down the theory for me to understand! Thanks for a great day at the zoo Matt - 5 stars and would highly recommend to others wanting to learn about photography!

Have just completed the Macro course run by Matt (May 2022). A great day with lots of learning, handouts and small information cards to keep in your camera bag. Matt had lots of ideas of how to photogragh fungi and had enough equipment eg different lighting that we could all try out. A really knowledge teacher with a lovely friendly style. He cooks a mean bbq lunch for everyone - thanks again Matt for a very successful day.

I did Matt's Night Course in the city on Feb 19, 2022. I found Matt very professional and extremely knowledgeble about all the different cameras everyone had. The course was a good range of skills for those with little or some knowledge. Matt continually checked on us all to make sure we were over the current skill he was showing us. Great night and well worth the dollars.

Just completed Matt’s Underwater Photography Course and Loved it!! No question was too stupid- Matt was patient and explained everything this complete novice needed to know in ways that made the “technical” stuff much less daunting! I recently did an Underwater Photography course with Matt and highly recommend it. He thoroughly walked us through step by step how to use our cameras and housings, which settings and modes to start with, and explained so clearly the main things to work on as beginners - how to position ourselves in the water, frame the subject, take care of lighting and reduce backscatter. He then showed us step by step with our own photos how to correct and edit them to bring back the original colours and features. Now to get out there and put it all into practice... Thanks Matt!

I did the street photography workshop with Matt and it was both informative and fun. Matt is a good communicator and is very knowledgable about all aspects of photography. He has a pleasant manner and if you'd like to try street photography, travel photography or documentary photography, I'd highly recommend Matt's workshop. Even if you've done some street photography already, you're sure to pick up some great tips and learn something from Matt. The three hour workshop duration is perfect.

I highly recommend doing a workshop with Matt. I did the Beginners Workshop at Melbourne Zoo a couple of days ago. It was fantastic. A very friendly and fun environment. The information was clear, easy to understand and Matt is very encouraging. He really wants you to get the most out of his workshop and progress with your photography. I took some great shots that I would never have achieved before gaining the information and tips that I got that day. I had an amazing day and can't wait to do my next workshop with Matt.
