Three benefits of using FLASH

On Monday last week we found ourselves up in the Macedon hills on my signature Macro workshop photographing fungi. One of the topics we cover is using different types of light and of course the conversation of flash vs constant light (like an LED panel) is on the agenda. There are a few reasons why flash can be more effective than using constant lighting. I’ll cover three of them here quickly.

  1. Unlike a constant light that emits… constantly a flash is quite powerful and instant meaning that it’s possible to use it to help freeze motion. This can be used to shoot moving subjects but perhaps more importantly when shooting macro it can be used to freeze hand shake which happens A LOT in macro without a tripod.

  2. Flash is instant so the shadows it casts are instant too. This means that unlike using a constant light like a torch that you might move around slightly the flash doesn’t ‘move’ during the shot at all so shadows appear more natural and more well defined.

  3. A flash is instant to it’s actually possible to balance the brightness of the ambient (sunlight) versus your flash. On the extreme end this can give you perfect back backgrounds even when shooting in brighter daylight.

If you’re keen to learn more about flash I have my Master Your Speedlight Workshop running next Saturday with a couple of places left. I even have loan speed lights if you’re not sure whether a speedlight is for you in the long term!
