Below is a review which I wrote after attending one of Matt's workshops in previous years. Towards the end of 2024 I enrolled again in his Travel & Street Photography where, as usual, he covered basic settings for those who required assistance while at the same time emphasing to all of the small group of six how to creatively take different kinds of shots. I also attended, for the first time, the Advanced Wildlife Photography at Healesville Sanctuary, which is one of his newer offerings. It was a great day and while a lot of the shots needed discarding, I'm sure everyone managed to produce some memorable keepers. On both occasions, Matt's favorite technique seemed to be getting down LOW but needless to say he came back up with some excellent images.Matt's workshops are always highly enjoyable and very worthwhile. Yesterday's Real World Portraits certainly met these criteria and I felt that the other participants felt the same as I did. I attended this workshop for the second time as I wanted to practise getting quicker at making better decisions on the spot which, in turn, would produce better photos. While I still feel that I failed to do this sufficiently well in too many instances - particularly in getting clear, uncluttered backgrounds - it was a useful exercise and Matt was nearby to offer praise in a few instances (I'm not sure whether was deserved or not though) and suggestions for improvements in other cases. This is an important advantage of his small-group workshops, with only six other participants. After yeserday's experience, I feel confident enough to return to the city to photograph buskers and any other individuals with sufficient allure who are also willing to be photographed. I realise that lots and lots of practice is necessary to become a better photographer and I am grateful to Matt for what I have learned from his guided instruction at various workshops to date. I strongly recommend anyone living within commuting distance to Melbourne to take advantage of the sessions which he offers in person.

I did two photography workshops with Matt - Night Photography in Melbourne and a one-on-one Underwater Photography workshop too. Matt has a real talent for breaking down complex topics and making them easy to understand. On top of that, his courses are fun and he’s a genuinely nice guy too. I’ll definitely be booking more workshops with him.

Matt's style is to help people learn rather than tell people what to do. The speedlight workshop was well paced, allowed people at all levels of experience to both enjoy and explore things they did not think were possible with simple equipment. Excellent value and wonderful company.

Matt's street photography workshop was great. Small group so you got to ask lots of questions and learn a lot. Matt is really friendly and helpful for people of all experience levels. I'd highly recommend and will quite possibly do another of his workshops in the future.

For anyone looking for a fun, relaxed, and easy to understand workshop, I highly recommend Matt's workshops. His ability to take technical concepts and break it down to something easy to understand (and actually remember) is the real value-add. This is my second workshop and definitely won't be my last!

I did the beginners course at the Melbourne Zoo last week and absolutely loved it! Matt was very helpful in explaining how to use certain functions on your camera in a way that was easy to understand. I've done workshops before and left totally zapped and couldn't remember a thing! I spent a few hours with Matt going over how to use Program, Aperture and Shutter modes; histogram and how to read it; focus options on camera; generally getting to know my camera and functions better. He’s a great teacher - listening skills, reflective comment, manages expectations of what can be achieved in a session, summarises what we’ve covered. Learnt a lot and appreciated him taking notes which he forwarded post session. Hard to find a photographer with such proficiency in both the technical as well as teaching ability.

This was a brilliant experience. Matt explained cameras and photography in a really basic way that even I could understand. It was amazing to see how much better my photos were immediately. Thanks for being my camera translator.

Making Sense of the 'P' :)What an amazing day. Matt was sensational! He explained everything clearly and made the processess relatable. He introduced us to the 'P' on our cameras and explained away the 'scary' and uncertainty. I found it so educational and had many 'ah ha' moments. Thank you Matt, a fun morning followed by lots of experimenting in the afternoon as you can see by all the attached photos 🙂

This was not only a fun day at the zoo but Matt introduced the foundations of photography without it being overwhelming. He gave clear, good examples and explanations and there was no expectation that you knew anything prior. I recently did a one on one course with Matt to get an understanding of how to setup the camera for underwater shots. The lesson was informative and at a level I could understand. Having now put it into practice it has made a vast improvement on my shots. Would throughly recommend Matts course.2/3/24I just completed the Travel and Street workshop with Matt and found it very enjoyable. The content was explained in an easy to understand manner and it has given me a new perspective of taking photos. Matt excels in explaining techniques which are easy to understand. The model CJ is a delight to work with and makes you feel at ease. If you are looking to learn how to make the best use of lightning I would certainly recommend the workshop.

I joined a beginners photography course with Matt at the Melbourne Zoo Sunday, even though a bit chilly and cold it was a terrific three hours. I was a little tentative being a beginner.,however Matt soon dispelled any nerves.I was impressed by his attention to not only the group but each individual.His explanations and instructions were clear and he certainly set me up with a greater understanding of the basics of my camera.His easygoing nature established a wonderful rapport with the group. It was fun! I look forward to working with him in another workshop, .I highly recommend them.

Loved my second workshop also. Was so absorbing. Really inspired me to get out there and take more photos. And to think more about the type of photo I wanted rather than just pointing and clicking.
